What is considered an RV in the Rack Industry?
Recreational vehicles (RVs) are a popular way to travel and explore the outdoors. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from small trailers to large motorhomes. But what exactly is an RV considered in the rack industry? It’s important to understand this in order to ensure that you are outfitting your RV with a safe and stable bike rack while being covered under the rack manufacturer’s warranty.
In the rack industry, an RV is a vehicle with specific hitch and axle measurements as well as all travel trailers. This includes motorhomes, trailers, fifth wheels, and even camper vans.
There are a few specific criteria that a vehicle must meet in order to be considered an RV in the rack industry.
The Breakdown
- Motorhomes with a hitch receiver that is 72 inches or greater from the rear axle is considered an RV
- Motorhomes without a hitch receiver are considered RVs if the distance from the rear axle to the back of the rear bumper is 72” or greater
- Travel trailers are always considered RVs in the rack industry, regardless of their size
- Camper vans are sometimes considered RVs, but this depends on the specific van. Some camper vans are classified as trucks or vans, while others are classified as RVs.
